Minute With Mallon: Your Time, Your Call!
Welcome to Minute with Mallon!
Something I Taught:
I was recently working with a client who loves music and has a personal goal of becoming a DJ. To help him towards his long-term personal goal, we set a short-term goal that he was going to either find a mentor or a DJ training program to improve his confidence.
When we had a follow-up call a few weeks later, he told me that so many things had gotten in the way. So I asked him if he had written his goal on the calendar.
He said no.
Then I told him about how every Saturday morning after playing pickleball I have it on my to-do list to go to the farmers’ market. It happens every single Saturday. Because it’s on the list, I never miss it. And it’s one of the most enjoyable things I do every week. I love the colors of the vegetables, love the health they bring, love interacting with the farmers, and love gardening. Going to the farmers’ market on Saturday means I get to be around "master gardeners" every week! 🍅🌽🍉
I asked him to name two times during the week that would be convenient for him to go to a training session. Very quickly, he came up with two times that he would have the free time for this endeavor.
We had less than five minutes left in our meeting, so I made him look me in the eyes and promise me that he would go ahead and schedule the recurring calendar events on his calendar right then.
He was laughing and wholeheartedly agreed to do so.
What’s the point of this?
If it’s not on the calendar, it’s not going to happen. Period!
You know this, and I know this.
So what’s something you want to do but that you've just never found the time for? Take action right now, go to your calendar, and add a recurring calendar event. Make sure that you schedule reminders so that you get some warning the day before, an hour before, and maybe 10 minutes before.
And then, just do it! 👊🏻
Something to Ponder:
“We make a living by what we get. We make a life by what we give.”
Winston Churchill
Something I Learned:
In the book, The Power of Purpose, I read this:
A lack of purpose leads to many disastrous ends with numerous bad consequences along the way. Here are just a few: You are frustrated because you are not making progress and cannot seem to get ahead. Busyness wins because there are no clear priorities. Discontentment and discouragement occur because you are comparing and looking around to see if others are getting ahead. You have little or no lasting fruit to show for the mountains of activity being produced. There is no correlation between the work and the results. Without clarity of focus, we end up pursuing the toys and trinkets of this world (wrong hope), we follow people and organizations who let us down (misplaced hope), or we live in utter despair (no hope).
Do you know what your life purpose is? Are you clear on your life mission? If you aren't, you're what Zig Ziggler would call a "Wandering Generality" instead of being a "Meaningful Specific."
With these words, Ziggler emphasized the importance of having clear goals and purpose rather than drifting aimlessly.
And by the way, I've committed to putting together a program to help you define your Life Purpose by the end of the year! I'll let you know when it's ready!
