Minute With Mallon: The Simple Hiring Test!
Welcome to Minute with Mallon!
Something I Taught:
One of my favorite podcasts is “Exponential Wisdom” with Peter Diamandis & Dan Sullivan. I feel like I always get smarter when I listen to them.
Peter is a bold thinker and is known for driving groundbreaking solutions to global challenges. He has both a Bachelor of Science in Molecular Genetics and a Bachelor of Science in Aerospace Engineering from MIT, plus a Doctor of Medicine (MD) from Harvard Medical School.
In short, he's a genius.
In a recent episode they were talking about best practices on how to hire people. At a certain point, Peter said this:
"My greatest indication is when they're with me in a meeting, do I want them to shut up? (They both laughed!!!)… in which case they are out of there and I know this is not going to work. Or am I curious what they have to say? In which case they are adding value.”
So simple…
It reminded me of a call I was on with a client who lives in Oklahoma City. He needs someone to do marketing for him, so we were interviewing a woman who had been recommended.
Unfortunately, we would ask a question and the woman WOULD NOT SHUT UP! She went on and on about what she'd done in the past and got off track time after time when asked specific questions that we needed answers to. She even apologized several times for getting off track.
When she got off the Zoom call, I asked my client what he thought. He started laughing and so did I. 🤭
We both agreed that we had no idea what the heck she had been talking about and felt that we had wasted 30 minutes of our day.
I asked him if he wanted to do a second interview with her. Thankfully he said no. There was no way he felt he would be able to work with her.
So think about what Peter said the next time you're interviewing someone.
If in doubt, do not hire!
Which brings me to this:
Something I Learned:
Years ago, I was asked by a manufacturing client to help him hire a very specific, very important position within his organization. We wanted it done at an elite level, so I had plenty of time to develop a system.
After months and months of reading books and listening to experts on the best hiring practices, I created a system. That system is called The A-Player Hiring Toolkit. I've put it to work helping dozens of companies and organizations hire outstanding employees over the last 20 years.
The easiest way to describe the system is to help you realize that there are three types of employees:
A-Player Employees: Top performers who consistently deliver exceptional results, align strongly with company values, and demonstrate high potential for growth and leadership.
B-Player Employees: Competent and reliable individuals who meet job expectations but may not consistently exceed them or show significant initiative for advancement.
C-Player Employees: Underperformers who regularly fail to meet performance standards and may negatively impact team productivity and morale.
In the average company, about 10% of the employees are A-Players. B-Players make up the next 25%, and C-Players make up about 65% of the workforce.
The key is to hire and retain as many A-Players and B-Players as you can. My system does just that!
Three of the many advantages of hiring only A & B Players are:
1. Improved Team Performance
A & B Players raise the overall productivity and efficiency of the team.
They contribute consistently to achieving organizational goals and maintaining high-quality standards.
2. Enhanced Workplace Morale
A & B Players inspire and motivate others through their dedication and performance.
Removing C-Players eliminates negativity or underperformance that can drag down team morale.
3. Increased Accountability
A & B Players are more likely to take ownership of their roles, reducing the need for micromanagement.
A high-performing team creates a culture of responsibility and excellence.
In short, your life gets easier while productivity and morale go up.
