Minute With Mallon: Wood on the Fire!
Hi folks and welcome to "Minute With Mallon!"
Something I Taught:
I was working with a client recently who told me that he wanted to move up in his organization. I asked him what he was doing to make this happen. He gave me some very non-specific answers. In other words, he was doing nothing to differentiate himself from his coworkers. I then told him this little story:
There was once a man who looked at a fireplace and said, "Give me some heat and then I'll give you some wood." The fireplace answered that the man must first put on the wood before he can get the heat.
You obviously get the point. Before you can “get,” first you must “do”.
So we took some time talking about what he could do over the next 90 days that would highlight and contrast what he was doing compared to his coworkers. We came up with this 90-Day Growth Cycle goal:
Through August, I am beginning to put the “Wood on the Fire” so that when the opportunity to get the fire comes, they will think of me, and I will learn at least five things that a person in my desired new position needs to know and master during this time, with my supervisor's help.
My question this week for you is this: Where do you need to put some wood on the fire in order to get a little more heat in your life?
Something I Learned:
In a book called The Power of Discipline by Daniel Walter I learned that there's a concept called the Status Quo Bias. It refers to the tendency of people to stick with the current state of affairs instead of making changes or taking new actions to move towards better situations in their lives.
I see this all the time with my clients and also find myself falling into the gravitational pull of my own status quos. The problem is we LOVE comfort. One of my jobs as a coach is to help my clients see where they are settling for the present situation, and then discover new status quos to work towards. After we have the new destination figured out we determine steps to get to the improved reality.
So I have two questions for you:
Can you think of a time when you or someone you know overcame their own status quo bias and achieved positive results?
Where is your own adherence to the status quo bias holding you back?
Let me know by sending me a quick email at Robert@EliteCoaching.Solutions. Doing this will help you stay accountable! Happy to help! :)
In my own life I'm trying to get better at my forehand in disc golf. My backhand is good and I gravitate towards that. It would be very easy not to take the extra practice time, but I'm committing to you right now to put the time in each week to improve my game. (Going to put the wood on the fire!)
Something to Ponder:
"Success is no accident. It is hard work, perseverance, learning, studying, sacrifice, and, most of all, love of what you are doing or learning to do." Pelé
