Minute With Mallon: Truly Off the Grid!

Welcome to Minute with Mallon!

Something I Taught:

Last week, right before coming up with 90-Day Quarterly Growth Goals with a client, we reviewed the goals we had set the previous quarter to see where she had landed with them.

Here's one of the goals she had set:

This quarter I am taking a screen-free vacation for an entire week so that I completely unplug from work, recharge my batteries, and come back highly engaged!

I remembered writing the goal with her and thinking it was a wonderful idea!

Here's what she said about meeting her goal:

"I did it! I took an entire week off — truly off. I removed Teams and email from my phone so that if anyone tried to reach me, it was clear: I was on vacation.

And it was wonderful.

I grew up in a culture where salaried managers were expected to stay connected — after hours, on weekends, even on vacation. Breaking that habit wasn’t easy. But I’m so glad I did.

It’s incredibly refreshing to work for a company that truly values rest and encourages us to fully unplug. Being able to shut everything down made all the difference.

I came back feeling renewed. Refreshed. Recharged!

It was amazing — and absolutely worth it."

What are the benefits of taking this kind of vacation?  Several studies suggest fully unplugged vacations can have a range of benefits including:

●  Less Stress & Anxiety – Taking a break from screens can improve mood and lower stress levels.

●  Better Sleep – Reduced screen time leads to deeper, more restful sleep.

●  Sharper Focus – Unplugging helps clear your mind and boosts concentration.

●  Stronger Relationships – More face-to-face time with others strengthens real connections.

●  More Movement – Less screen time usually means more physical activity.

As you start thinking about spring or summer vacation, let me encourage you to take a bold step: really unplug.  Take the apps off your phone.  Step away from the inbox.  Give yourself the gift of being fully present with your family, with nature, and with yourself. You’ll come back clearer, more refreshed, and more grounded than ever. 🏖️

Something to Ponder:

“Be more concerned about making others feel good about themselves than you are in making them feel good about you.”

My dear friend, Dr. Dan Reiland

Something I Learned:

There is a person in this world who truly dislikes me.  We know each other, and our paths cross every once in a while.  I've never done anything to offend or antagonize him, but I've heard through the grapevine that he doesn't like me at all.

While reading the book, "Be a People Person," by John Maxwell, I read these words:

"When you realize that people treat you according to how they see themselves rather than how you really are, you are less likely to be affected by their behavior. Your self-image will reflect who you are, not how you're treated by others. You will not be riding an emotional roller coaster."

Not trying to sound saintly or anything, but one month I felt God's press to pray for this man every… single… day…

I did, and you know what?  Nothing changed!  I guess it was because I chose February to pray for him — the shortest month of the year!

So remember: how others treat you says more about them than it ever will about you — and sometimes, the real change happens in us, not them.
