Minute With Mallon: The Habitual Route to Success

Something I Taught:

You don't create your future, you create your habits. And your habits create your future!

Think about that for a minute: what you do over and over is what brings long-lasting success OR failure into your life.

Over the years, I've helped hundreds of clients determine the best habits to incorporate to help them accomplish their specific goals. And I've learned that there's a pattern that works wonders.

But first, a few facts:

-> Consistency is crucial when it comes to developing a new habit. It's better to do a little bit each day than to do a lot in one go. The more frequently you perform the action, the quicker it will become ingrained in your daily routine.

-> The time it takes to form a habit can vary depending on the person and the complexity of the habit they're trying to develop. Studies have found that it takes about 21-66 days for a habit to become automatic.

One of the keys to developing a habit is called Pearson's Law.

When performance is measured, performance improves.

When performance is measured and reported back, the rate of improvement is accelerated.

Essentially, Pearson's Law means that if you want to make a habit stick, you should keep track of how you're doing. And better yet, share your progress with someone else.

For example, if you want to make a habit of exercising a certain number of times each week, first figure out how much you're exercising right now, then set a goal for yourself and keep a record of your exercise routine. You could write this down in a journal or use an app – whatever works for you. Finally, share your progress with a friend or group that's supporting you.

If you think about it, this is the model that CrossFit, AA, and Weight Watchers all use.

When you keep track of what you're doing, it helps you be more aware of your actions, make better decisions, and stay motivated. Sharing your progress helps to keep you honest and can give you an extra boost of motivation to keep going and reach your goals.

That's the secret!

And remember:

You don't create your future, you create your habits. And your habits create your future!

So what is a habit that you can begin today or this week that will help you get to where you want to be one to five years from now? How will you track it? And who will you engage to hold you accountable? Please let me know by responding to this email!

Something I Learned:

College football starts this weekend, and the NFL regular season begins on September 7th. A favorite time of the year for many! 🏈

Recently I was listening to a podcast that featured a gentleman named Gad Saad, a Professor at Concordia University.

During the interview, he talked about studies that have found that the levels of testosterone in both men and women go way up while watching sports. And here's an interesting fact: if your team wins, the level of testosterone goes up significantly more than if they lose. Imagine that! ☺️ I had no idea! 🫢

Anyway, I thought this information was such a coincidence since I've since learned that the Georgia Bulldogs will win all 8 regular season games AND they will again win the National Championship in January 2024. (Okay, my apologies for making several hundred of you angry because you’re not Bulldog fans!) 🙊

And the Falcons will go undefeated this year and win the SuperBowl! First time in history!!! 🥹

I'm not going to miss a minute of any game… And I hope Sandy doesn't either!!!

Oh, and by the way, please don't tell Sandy about this stufy! We’ll let her find out on her own!! 😆

Something to Ponder:

"We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit."

- Aristotle
