Minute With Mallon: Mastering Habits with Streaks!

Welcome to Minute with Mallon!

Something I Taught:

In the last newsletter, we discussed Pearson's Law and the power of tracking!  Today we're going to continue this discussion.

A study conducted by Phillippa Lally and her team at the University College London found that, on average, it takes about 66 days for a new behavior to become automatic.  This is where you reach the deepest level of

Automaticity.

Automaticity refers to the ability to perform actions without conscious thought or intention.

Repetition is the key!  So when I'm working with a client who wants to form a new habit, I tell them about an app I found several years ago called Streaks

Streaks is an app that helps you form good habits.  Every time you complete the habit, your streak is extended.  The longer the streak, the deeper the habit.

Several months ago, I brought up the concept that you don't determine your future, you choose your habits, and your habits determine your future.  YOU MUST DO THE WORK in order to get the future that you want.

Here's a photo of the habits I'm tracking on my Streaks app right now:

These have changed over time.  Some I tracked for a couple of months until I had the habit, and as you can see, others remain that I just want to keep doing.

On the app you can track 1 to 24 habits.  It truly does become a very positive addiction and will help you to proactively create the life that you want.

Might I suggest that you get the app and pick ONE habit that you'd like to start working on.  The good thing about the app is that you can choose how many times you want to do the habit each week and you can also choose the days you'd like to do it.

Love to hear what you come up with! 🚀

Something I Learned:

In his book Extreme Ownership, Jacko Willick, states:

When setting expectations, no matter what has been said or written, if substandard performance is accepted and no one is held accountable—if there are no consequences—that poor performance becomes the new standard. Therefore, leaders must enforce standards.

We've talked about this in other newsletters.  I'm literally sitting with a client right now while he writes out exactly what he is going to say to a person who reports to him who is not living up to expectations.

If you don't deal with the situation, you're the problem, not the employee!

Please remember that!

Something to Ponder:
