Minute With Mallon: Future > Past: The Blueprint
Welcome to Minute With Mallon!
Something I Taught:
This I know - subscribers to this newsletter range in age from mid 20’s to mid 80’s. It doesn’t matter your age, today’s subject will interest you if you want a great life!
"Always create a future that’s bigger than your past!"
Stop, read that out loud, and then think about that sentence for a few seconds.
I was reading a book called The Lincoln Highway several months ago. The book is about how the typical life moves from beginning to end.
The author said at the beginning of life, the world we live in is very small. Let me give you an example.
I have a grandson who is a little over a year old. One evening, his dad was carrying him down the hall from the nursery to give him a bath. My grandson noticed for the first time that there was a guest bedroom across the hall from the bathroom and pointed to it.
So his world expanded - there were more rooms in the house. Up to that time, his world revolved around mom, dad, baths, his high chair, and their dog.
As he grows older, his life will continue to expand. First grade, sports, high school, college, girls! Girls!!, GIRLS!!!!! 🙌🏻 Just kidding, but you get the point. 🤭
Anyway, at a certain point, usually in mid-life our lives start to contract and get smaller again. I did my best to draw it out the way I saw it in my mind. It begins to look like the purple lines here:
Here's an excerpt from the book that explains this:
The manner in which the lines converge takes you by surprise, that is the cruelest part. And yet it’s almost unavoidable. For at the moment when the turning begins, the two opposing rays of your life are so far from each other you could never discern the change in their trajectory. And in those first years, as the rays begin to angle inward, the world still seems so open, you have no reason to suspect its diminishment. But one day, one day years after the convergence has begun, you cannot only sense the inward trajectory of the walls, you can begin to see the terminal point in the offing even as the terrain that remains before you begins to shrink at an accelerating pace.
I've been teaching the "Always create a future that's bigger than your past" concept for years to my clients. I am intentional about helping them create a fun, energizing, and happy life for as long as they can. This is represented by the red drawing on the right side of the drawing.
Last week, I was working with several clients who are in one of my mastermind groups. Somehow this concept came up and I told them that my deepest desire is to be on a Zoom call working with one of my clients when I'm in my 80's, helping them grow their business, career, or life, and just FALLING OVER DEAD right in the middle of the conversation!
And then I wake up and Jesus is standing there with his arms open, a grin on his face, and he's saying "Welcome home Robert!!! Great Job!" 😇
To me, that would be the perfect way to go!
So what do you have to do in order to always create this future that's bigger than your past?
Here is what I consider most important:
Stay active
Stay healthy
Annual physical
Dentist appointments
Eat the right foods
Exercise
Stay in love
Have plenty of social connections and friends younger than you
Have a purpose (Or many of them!)
Serve, serve, serve
Have a hobby
Volunteer
Invest and use financial advisors so that you have plenty of money to take care of your needs, etc.
Keep your mind active by lifelong learning
Reading, taking classes, learning things on YouTube
What else comes to your mind? Let me know!!
And specifically, how are you creating a future that's bigger and more energizing than your past?
I'd love to hear, so please respond to this email with any thoughts you have!
Something I Learned:
I learned this a couple of months ago. It remains in my mind because it’s so true.
➡️ James Clear: "The difference between how I feel before my first set in the gym and how I feel after my first set is enormous. You don't even need a full workout (or work session, etc.) to feel good again. You are 5 minutes away from putting your day on a completely different trajectory.
Something to Ponder:
“To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment.”
Ralph Waldo Emerson
