Minute With Mallon: Developing Decision-Making Skills
Welcome to Minute with Mallon!
Something I Taught:
One of your jobs is to always be developing your people. It’s the only way to become a great leader and is integral to the development of your company.
I was working with a client today who has a sales leader under him who, whenever a decision needs to be made, goes to him to get the answers. He wants this to change.
He told me that she is more than capable of making good decisions by herself, but she's afraid of disapproval from him or the other two partners in the firm.
Ultimately we determined that he will have a conversation with her to let her know that from now on, if she needs approval on a decision, she must first type out on a piece of paper what she thinks the right decision would be, and then come to him with a copy of that sheet so that he can read along with her and discuss the logic behind her thinking.
How did we decide on this course of action? Well, at the end of each coaching call, I ask my clients what actions we will take based on our conversation. He told me that one of the things he'd do was to ask his sales leader to tell him her decision. And I pointed out that he needed to ask her to write out her decision.
And then I said this:
Reading makes a man full, writing makes a man precise!
Writing out her decision, and thinking on paper, will give the sales leader real precision in her thought process and she'll know exactly what her decision will be.
It will also allow him to see exactly what she’s thinking about doing. So he can either say "Yes, 100%, go do that," or "Yes, I like that, and you may want to add this to it also."
That way, they are on the same page, he is teaching her to think for herself, and he will no longer have to be involved with as many decisions that she should be handling herself.
Something to Ponder:
When I argue with reality, I lose 100% of the time.

Something I Learned:
Recently one of our friends introduced us to an app called Yuca. We began using it to scan the barcodes of food and personal care products to immediately see the impact on our health.
Yuca is a 100% independent project. No brand or manufacturer can influence them in any way. And there is no in-app advertising.
What we found out was that we were using some very well-known products that we trusted that unfortunately turned out to be really bad for us! Eeek!!! No, seriously!!!
And the best part is that the app recommends healthier alternatives in an objective way!
They have a database of over 5 million products. And it's rated a 4.8 with over 58,000 reviews.
Download it right now! I want you to be as healthy as possible my friend!!!
